Language Arts

Students are provided instruction for the learning of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and literature.

Phonics

Saxon Phonics is an intense, systematic program where students are first taught the 26 individual letters, the 44 sounds those letters make, and the rules governing the more than 70 ways those sounds are spelled.

Math

Saxon Mathematics builds students mathematics skills in sequential order.  Exposing them to computation, estimation, fractions, geometry, problem solving, reasoning, patterns, and relationships, statistics and probability, economics, sorting and classifying, scale, and graph reading as their minds begin the building process.

bullet

Beginning in the 4th grade, students have the availability of two levels of Saxon math.  Students graduating from St. Joseph have the opportunity to complete Algebra I with the possibility of being introduced to geometry.

Science

Each grade area builds on the skills emphasized by prior grade levels.  To reach a high level of achievement in science it is necessary to focus on  learning and teaching processes.  Animal behavior, Health Education, Earth Science, Physical Science, life Science, Weather, Hands-on Science Environment and science skills such as measuring, classifying, experimenting, interpreting, hypothesizing, communication, modeling relationships and practicing science safety are major components of our well developed science curriculum.

Social Studies

Students study Neighborhoods, Communities, Geography, History, Civics, Culture, and Environment.  Skill development in Social Studies is inclusive of five basic areas:

bullet

the ability to interpret data

bullet

the ability to relate data

bullet

the ability to analyze cause and effect

bullet

the ability to use multiple perspectives.

bullet

the ability to make decisions.

As a general pattern, the skills proceed from lower to higher thinking skills, each grade area building on what has been emphasized in the previous grade level.

Religion

The Silver Burdett Series is the tool we use to guide our students through the study of Prayer, Sacraments, Saints, Religious Literature, World Religions, Human Relations, and Liturgy.  Students are prepared through instruction to be intellectually alert, morally self-disciplined, self-confident, self-motivated, and committed to a Christian lifestyle.

Students of Grades K-8 will attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as a school community once a week and Morning Prayer on a daily basis.  younger students pair up with their Prayer Partners for Mass and paraliturgies during Lent, Advent, and other Religious Celebrations.

While students of other religions are accepted by St. Joseph and no attempt is made to change their religious convictions, all students are expected to attend religion classes, complete assignments, and attend liturgies.

Middle School students are required  to do community service as part of their Religion grade.

Music

Music instruction is intended to provide the student with opportunities for:

enjoyment and appreciation.

Music instruction is based on a combination of performing, reading, creating, listening, and describing music.

To enhance the music curriculum each year,  the students travel to Tulsa to  listen to the Tulsa Philharmonic and the Tulsa Opera.

Choir

Students in grades 3-7 are forming a choir.  They will practice with Mr. Starnes on Tuesdays and lead us during our weekly liturgy.
